Posthumous writings of Dr. Alexander Van de Sandt
Some years ago when Max van de Sandt visited our aged cousin Hermann van de Sandt in Belgium, he had an interesting experience. Hermann showed him a copy of Latin writings by Dr. Alexander van de Sandt (1663-1721), attorney and alderman at Xanten, Germany. In the form of a chronicle Alexander described his youth, his years of study, the origin of his family, his offspring, and the family of his wife, Anna Mechtild Streuff. The writings were copied in 1938/39 by Hermann's brother Edgar (d. 1968); just in time, because the original writings were lost during World War II.
The writings turned out to contain so much information about our ancestors in the 17th and 18th centuries, that it was decided to make them more accessible to our family and other persons interested. For that purpose the text had to be translated from Latin into Dutch. Max van de Sandt and his brother-in-law Hein Onderdenwijngaard worked on it for several years.
In
1995 the writings were published as a book entitled 'Nagelaten geschriften van
Alexander van de Sandt J.u.D.' (Posthumous writings of Dr. Alexander van de
Sandt); ISBN 90-9008350-2. In 126 pages it contains the original Latin text as
well as the Dutch translation. The price of the book is EUR 10,-(forwarding
charges not included).
The library of Dr. Alexander van de Sandt
Dr. Alexander van de Sandt possessed a library which for that time was extensive. Unfortunately the library has been lost since the end of World War II, but the original handwritten catalogue from 1691 is still held in the 'Stiftsarchiv' at Xanten. It includes well over 700 books, not only in the juridical field, but also in that of theology, philosophy, history, and literature.
On the basis of that catalogue Max van de Sandt and Hein Onderdenwijngaard made a profound study of Alexander van de Sandt's library, its nature and quality. The results of their study, with the complete catalogue, have been published in English in the scientific periodical 'LIAS' [Sources and Documents relating to the Modern History of Ideas], vol. 27/1; ISSN 0304-0003. You can order an off-print of the publication (94 pages, 2 illustrations) for the price of EUR 5,- (forwarding charges not included).
Also a Dutch version of the study, entitled 'Toon mij uw boeken…'(Show me your
books…) (68 pages, 4 illustrations, but without the catalogue) is available.
Price: EUR 4,-.
The family tree of the Dutch Van de Sandt family
The
family tree of the Dutch Van de Sandt family, as put on this website, is also
available in a graphical edition on paper. It contains the Dutch branch of the
family (without the Van de Zandt-line) as well as its German ancestors in the
straight line, with brothers and sisters, altogether about 200 persons in 15
generations. The price of the family tree (84 x 118 cm) is EUR 8,- (forwarding
charges not included).
The history of the 'Hof op den Sande'
Max
and Casper van de Sandt did some research on the 'Hof op den Sande', the
homestead from which the European Van de Sandt family originates (see under
Family history). Max published the results in a booklet in Dutch entitled 'Van
Hof up den Sande tot Große Sandenhof; de geschiedenis van onze stamhoeve' (From
Hof up den Sande till Große Sandenhof; the history of our homestead); ISBN
90-806790. The price of the booklet (24 pages, 7 illustrations, preface also in
German) is EUR 3,-.
The Van de Sandt coat of arms
A
colour picture of the Van de Sandt coat of arms, as published on this website,
is available on A4-format. Price: EUR 2,50 (forwarding charges not included).
The oldest generations
Casper and Max van de Sandt researched the oldest generations of the Van de
Sandt family. In the State Archives at Dusseldorf, the Archiepiscopal Archives
at Cologne, the 'Stiftsarchiv' at Xanten and the Museum Burg Linn at Krefeld
(all in Germany) as well as at the Dutch Nobility Council at The Hague they
found interesting charters concerning our earliest ancestors. The oldest charter
they found dates from 11 August 1358. In this charter Konrad vammeSande and his
wife Greta are mentioned as the landholders of the 'Hof up den Sande' near Rees
(Germany).
On
the basis of these charters the history of eight generations of the family in
the period 1350-1650 are described in a new publication, published in 2004 in
Dutch entitled ' Onze vroegste voorouders, acht generaties van de Sandt
1350-1650', ISBN 90-806790-2-X. A family tree of the oldest generations and
(short) transcriptions of the charters are included in the second part of the
booklet. The price of the booklet (54 pages, 3 illustrations, summary and
conclusion also in German) is Euro 6,- (forwarding charges not included).

The Van de Sandt family in the Dutch Indies
In October 1998 Max van de Sandt and his family visited the coffee and rubber estate 'Sumber Manggis Kidul' at Dampit (East-Java, Indonesia). At the time when Indonesia was a Dutch colony (the East Indies) Constant van de Sandt (1875-1945) was the estate manager. During the Japanese occupation of the Indies (1942-1945) he died in an internment camp.
Max van de Sandt has published a book called "Een plantersleven" about the life, the work and the internment of Constant van de Sandt and his family at the Walburg Press, Zutphen, The Netherlands. Out of Stock.
